Comment: I need to change my screen res quickly to see how my web pages appear at different resolutions.
Fortunately, this is still feasible with a 'fatty' - flatscreens only work properly at their design
resolution. However, this 'utility' couldn't recognise my ATI screen driver, so it defaulted to a
refresh rate of 60Hz - causing an annoying flicker and skewed picture. To get back, I needed to get
into the ATI menu, where refresh rate should be set to 'Optimal' - ie. for lower res, the refresh
rate can be faster - another reason for keeping 800 * 600 (apart from needing it to be able to read
system fonts!) is 100Hz refresh rate, with no apparent flicker. I found later that Windows 98 has an inbuilt 'RapidRes', also accessible from the system tray. Go to
Control Panel --> Display --> Settings --> Advanced (ie. where you'd normally have to go to
change screen res), and check "Show settings icon on task bar". Problem solved - and no refresh rate
problems. The standard utility shows all available resolutions and colour depths, and also provides a quick
link to the advanced display settings page.
